* Conversations with questioners, mavericks and mavens *
Tongues celebrates and interrogates those who go against the grain – the rebels, the dreamers, the pioneers and provocateurs.
We ask them about their journeys – about influences and inspiration; about exploring, making and meaning; about questioning and connection.
We’re hungry for honesty: the raw, unvarnished truth. We want to know about lessons learned, about getting lost or getting found; being saved or being damned; triumphs, turning points and pivotal moments.
We want your wisdom.
Catarina Pereira * Creative and Editorial Director
As creative and editorial director of TONGUES, Catarina is the platform’s custodian and curator, and is responsible for its design.
Catarina believes in communication’s potential to inspire change and forge connection. Always celebrating diversity, she is fascinated by people’s journeys, and loves to discover what motivates and guides us, individually and collectively.
After finishing her Communication Design degree in her hometown, Lisbon, she moved to the Big Smoke in 2004, completing a Master’s in Communication Art and Design at the Royal College of Art in 2007. She now divides her time between London and Berlin.
Catarina’s work spreads across various disciplines, editorial, branding, fashion, music and cultural work. She acquired a vast professional experience working with various renowned studios in London, such as Saville Associates, John Morgan studio and Winkreative. Clients included Hèrmes, Lexus, David Chipperfield architects, Phillips de Pury, Tom Dixon, Kvadrat, Somerset House. In 2018, she formed Voodoo Voodoo, a platform which provides art direction, branding, design and editorial expertise to a diverse array of clients.
When she’s not being hypnotised by a screen or meeting with clients and collaborators, you’ll find Catarina at a music gig, lost in an archive, taking photographs or swimming.
Alexander Matthews * Editor
Alexander commissions, writes and edits content for TONGUES.
Insatiable curiosity and a lifelong love of words have meant that journalism has been a natural fit for him. Like his childhood hero, Tintin, he’s frequently away from home and often writes about his adventures — whether it’s crossing the US by rail, walking the Camino, or falling off a surfboard in Indonesia.
Over Alexander’s more than decade-long writing career, he’s had many encounters with memorable characters — from charismatic politicians to provocative artists. An accomplished interviewer, he has quizzed Ruby Wax about mindfulness, discussed writing with Nobel Laureate Nadine Gordimer and Booker-winning author Alan Hollinghurst, and learnt from adventurer Sir Raunulph Fiennes about what it takes to survive the polar wastes.
Having survived a year in London as an assistant to MONOCLE’s editor-in-chief, he’s gone on to serve the magazine as its Southern Africa correspondent. His bylines also appear frequently in a number of other publications.
Alexander meditates and swims to stay (relatively) sane, and is addicted to sea salt caramel and Aeropress coffee. In spite of being an avowed nature-lover, he’s terrified of bats.
